Diagnosing a Google Traffic Drop After AI Overviews

A fall in Google clicks can coincide with AI Overviews without being caused by them. This diagnostic shows you how to align Search Console, analytics, ranking, demand and conversion evidence before changing content or search controls.

Treat the traffic drop as evidence to investigate

A professional-services firm sees organic clicks fall after AI Overviews become more visible for its advice-led searches. Rankings appear steady. Google may have answered those questions on the results page. The timing alone doesn't establish cause.

The same chart could reflect lower search demand, a tracking change, a lost group of queries, an indexing fault, stronger competitors or a shift in which searches Google counts as impressions. If leads fell while sessions stayed steady, the problem may sit on the landing page rather than the results page.

Start with a comparison window you can defend

Choose the business question before opening a report. Are you investigating fewer clicks, lower click-through rate, fewer qualified visits or lost enquiries? Each question needs different evidence.

Use like-for-like periods long enough to reduce daily noise. Compare the same weekdays and account for seasonality. Exclude the newest incomplete data. Search Console dates use Pacific Time, while analytics and CRM systems may use the business time zone. Record those definitions rather than pretending their daily totals should align perfectly.

Annotate anything that could change the result, including a site release, migration, analytics update, campaign, outage, core update, service change or unusual brand activity. If the decline started on a release date, that deserves investigation before a broad theory about AI search.

For an initial check, compare four weeks before the suspected change with four complete weeks after it, then repeat the comparison against the equivalent period a year earlier where seasonality matters. This isn't a universal rule. It's a practical starting point that makes the window reviewable.

Separate fewer searches from fewer clicks

Start with Search Console query and page data. Impressions, average position and CTR provide the first useful split.

Stable impressions and broadly stable position with lower CTR raise the possibility that the results page or searcher's intent changed. An AI Overview may be part of that change. So might a featured snippet, local pack, shopping result, stronger title from a competitor or a shift from research to action.

Falling impressions point elsewhere first. Search demand may have declined, rankings may have moved, relevant pages may have dropped from the index, or the site may no longer cover the queries Google associates with the topic. A stable site-wide average position can conceal a sharp loss in one commercially important query group, so don't stop at the headline metric.

Stable organic sessions with fewer leads move the investigation again. Check landing-page engagement, form completion, calls, booking journeys and lead quality. Our organic intent audit covers that conversion problem in more depth.

AI Overviews remain a credible source of CTR pressure. In Pew Research Center's observed browsing study, traditional results received clicks in 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without one. Links cited inside the summary received clicks in 1% of visits with an AI summary. The study used March 2025 browsing data from 900 US adults across 68,879 Google searches, with result pages collected in April.

Those aggregate results make the hypothesis worth testing. Site-level evidence still has to establish the cause. The shared scale below shows the observed gap.

Ahrefs has also found a substantial correlation between AI Overview presence and lower position-one CTR. Its February 2026 analysis of December 2025 data compared 150,000 AI Overview keywords with 150,000 informational keywords without one and estimated a 58% lower average CTR for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview appeared. Query mix, intent and the comparison method matter, so use this as behavioural context rather than a loss rate to apply to your website.

An August 2026 preprint by Chapekis, Lieb and co-authors, presented at IC2S2 2026, analysed the same scale of observed panel browsing. Its mixed-effects model found AI Overviews remained associated with fewer outbound clicks after accounting for panelist effects and query attributes. It remains an association from a bounded US panel, not a causal estimate for every query or business.

Use Google's AI report as exposure evidence

Google launched dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports in June 2026. The Search Console report documentation says the Search report covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It can group those impressions by page, country, date and device.

Access is still rolling out to a subset of properties, and a property may also lack enough impressions to show the report. The current report centres on impressions. It doesn't provide the counterfactual click total you would have received without the feature.

If you have access, use the report to identify when exposure changed and which pages, countries and devices were involved. Then compare those pages with their wider Web performance, analytics sessions and conversions. An increase in generative AI impressions alongside stable position and lower CTR strengthens the exposure hypothesis. It still needs dated observations of the relevant results pages and control for other changes.

If the report is absent, build query groups around pages most likely to trigger AI Overviews. Sample the live results on recorded dates, locations and devices. Compare those groups with less-exposed branded, local or decision-stage queries. This is sampled evidence, so keep the observation conditions beside it.

Test the explanations that can look like AI impact

Run the checks in an order that can eliminate a simpler cause early.

  1. Confirm tracking and reporting definitions. Check consent changes, analytics tags, channel rules, Search Console lag and incomplete dates.
  2. Check indexing and canonical status for the affected pages. Review robots rules, redirects, canonicals, noindex directives and server availability.
  3. Segment queries and pages. Look for losses hidden by site-wide averages, including changes in rank distribution rather than average position alone.
  4. Check demand and seasonality. Use year-on-year Search Console impressions, branded demand, campaign timing and relevant market signals.
  5. Review dated results pages. Record AI Overviews and other features, competitor movement, title changes and the apparent intent of the result set.
  6. Cross-check sessions and conversions. Establish whether the loss stops at the click, continues into qualified traffic or begins after the visit.

Google says its generative AI features use the core Search ranking and quality systems. Its guidance for generative AI features keeps indexed, snippet-eligible pages as the technical baseline. Eligibility doesn't guarantee crawling, indexing, inclusion or traffic, but it means normal search faults remain live suspects.

Build the case at query and page level

Site-wide organic traffic is too broad for causal attribution. Group queries by buyer job and likely exposure. An expert-led firm might separate definition searches, problem diagnosis, service comparisons, branded searches, local searches and proof-seeking questions.

For each group, compare impressions, clicks, CTR and position across the same windows. Then map the queries to landing pages and check analytics sessions, meaningful actions, enquiries and conversion value. A pattern confined to informational queries with observed AI Overviews is more persuasive than a site-wide decline that also affects brand and service searches.

Consider an illustrative case. A consultancy compares four complete weeks before and after a suspected change. Its informational query group holds broadly steady for impressions and position, while CTR and landing-page sessions fall. Branded and service comparison groups remain stable. Dated checks repeatedly find AI Overviews on the affected informational searches. That evidence supports an AI-related CTR hypothesis with moderate confidence. It doesn't show that every lost click came from the feature, and it doesn't yet establish a commercial loss.

The firm then finds that those pages rarely assisted enquiries. The diagnosis changes the priority. The traffic loss is real, but repairing decision-stage coverage may matter more than recovering every informational visit.

Choose the repair that matches the evidence

If the affected pages lack original evidence, clear sourcing or useful proof, strengthen what makes them worth citing. The citation-worthy content framework helps turn unsupported explanation into material a reader or search system can verify.

If the query analysis reveals missing buyer questions, build connected coverage rather than expanding one page without a plan. Use query fan-out content planning to map research, comparison, proof and action needs across the right pages.

If indexing, parsing or page relationships are weak, repair the technical foundation with the structured content guide. If rankings fell, treat it as an SEO diagnosis. Improving headings for AI search won't solve lost authority, an indexing fault or a weaker result.

Before choosing any repair, leave a record another person can challenge and rerun.

Decide what the loss changes commercially

Close the investigation with a short decision. Name the likely cause, confidence, affected query and page groups, conversion value at risk, action owner and review date. Low confidence supports more measurement. A confirmed indexing fault supports technical repair. A concentrated loss of valuable decision-stage traffic supports a focused content and search response.
