Start with the backlog decision
A website owner asks three suppliers which schema markup the business needs. One recommends every type in a plugin. Another focuses on rich results. A third proposes custom structured data across the site. The useful question is which business facts and page types deserve a maintained machine-readable description. Priority depends on visible evidence, page purpose, current Google support, template reach, commercial usefulness and an owner who can keep the data accurate.

Google describes structured data as a standardised way to provide explicit clues about a page and its entities in its introduction to structured data. Google also maintains a defined gallery of supported Search features. The full Schema.org vocabulary is broader. A type can be valid vocabulary without having a dedicated Google search appearance.
That distinction should shape the budget. Schema can make an accurate page easier for machines to interpret and can create eligibility for a documented feature. It does not guarantee rankings, rich results, an AI citation or any particular display.
Apply the hard gates first
Every candidate type should pass four gates before it reaches the backlog.
First, the relevant facts must appear on the page. Google's general structured data guidelines say markup should represent the page's main content and avoid describing content hidden from readers. A JSON-LD block needs the visible support of a named service, an article byline or meaningful information about the person profiled.
Second, the type must fit the page's primary purpose. A service page can describe an offer. An expert profile can focus on one person. Adding types simply because a tool recognises them creates a graph that is harder to govern and may misrepresent what the page is about.
Third, each important property needs a source of truth. Company details might come from an approved business record. Article dates should come from the publishing system. Service names and providers need an accountable commercial owner. If the business name, location or provider identity is disputed, resolve the canonical facts with the business entity guide before encoding them.
Fourth, somebody must own maintenance. A technically valid launch can become misleading when a phone number, author relationship, opening hour or service scope changes. Weak headings and missing visible labels also need correction in the site's semantic and accessible structure, not only in JSON-LD.
Passing these gates still creates eligibility rather than a promise. Google states that correctly marked-up content is not guaranteed to appear as a rich result. Schema.org validity, Google feature eligibility, the graph Google indexes and the presentation Google selects are four separate checks.
Choose the business identity layer
For many service businesses, an accurate identity node is the first useful candidate because it connects stable company facts used across the site.
Google's Organization structured data documentation says homepage markup can help Google understand administrative details and disambiguate the organisation. It recommends the homepage or a single organisation page such as an about page, and advises using the most specific applicable Organization subtype. That supports a contained baseline built from approved facts rather than an Organization block copied onto every URL.
LocalBusiness is a more specific branch with different prerequisites. Google's LocalBusiness guidance covers physical location data, opening details, departments and eligible local business appearances. It asks implementers to define each local location and use the most specific applicable LocalBusiness subtype.
Treat service-area businesses as an evidence-led decision rather than a universal rule. A business category, a city mentioned in copy or a private office does not settle the choice. Use LocalBusiness when the actual operation, the visible page and Google's current requirements support the local-location case. If that evidence is uncertain, implement Organization provisionally and commission a fact and eligibility check.

Prioritise reliable templates
After business identity, look for templates with repeatable visible evidence and reliable ownership. A type deployed across a governed template can produce more consistent coverage than handcrafted markup on isolated pages.
BreadcrumbList is a strong candidate when the page already shows a meaningful hierarchy. Google's Breadcrumb documentation recommends representing a typical user path rather than mechanically copying the URL. The template should draw both the visible trail and the structured data from a maintained hierarchy.
Article belongs on genuine editorial templates with governed titles, bylines, publish dates, meaningful update dates and images. It is worth prioritising when the publishing process can keep those fields aligned. ProfilePage with Person is conditional. Google's ProfilePage guidance requires the page's primary focus to be one affiliated person or organisation. A maintained expert page with biography, role and authored work can justify the investment. A thin team card or an abandoned author archive cannot. Use the expert profile and Person schema guide when the visible profile and ownership pass that test.
WebSite and WebPage can provide useful graph context, but their presence alone is not a commercial outcome. Keep them coherent with stable identifiers and the page's actual purpose. Promote them as rich-result investments only when current feature documentation supports the claim.
Use Service for accurate offers
A visible service page can justify Service markup when it names a real offer, describes its scope and identifies the provider accurately. Schema.org defines Service as a service provided by an organisation, person or audience. That makes it useful vocabulary for connecting an offer to the business behind it.
Service does not currently have a dedicated feature in Google's supported structured data gallery. Its value is accurate machine-readable description and a coherent entity relationship, not a promised rich result. This usually places it after the core identity and reliable template work, unless service-page clarity is the site's most important modelling problem.
Before rollout, confirm which pages represent distinct offers, where the provider fact comes from and who will update the markup when the offer changes. The Service schema implementation guide covers that page-level work without inflating its likely search presentation.
Review low-value opportunities
Common schema checklists often preserve recommendations after their Google feature value has changed. That creates a backlog driven by old screenshots rather than current evidence.
Google's FAQ and HowTo rich-result update says FAQ rich results are generally limited to well-known authoritative government and health websites. It also records that HowTo rich results were deprecated in Google Search. Both positions were rechecked on 28 August 2026 against the current supported-feature gallery.
For most service businesses, that makes FAQPage and HowTo weak investments when the stated goal is a Google rich result. Keep useful visible FAQs and instructions when they help readers. Fund the markup only when a current, evidenced benefit justifies it.
Deferral should be recorded with a reason and review date. That allows the business to reconsider when its pages change or Google updates feature support, without leaving speculative work in the active build.
Test the framework on a consultancy site
Consider a hypothetical expertise-led consultancy. Its home and about pages contain stable company details and national service positioning. It has no public customer-facing branch page. The site also has six maintained service pages, a governed insights template, three substantial expert profiles and visible breadcrumb navigation.
The company facts support Organization on the home or about page. The visible hierarchy supports BreadcrumbList on relevant templates. Governed bylines and dates support Article on insight pages. The maintained expert pages support ProfilePage with Person. The six offer pages can support Service after the provider relationships are confirmed.
LocalBusiness is deferred because the visible site does not establish a qualifying local-location case. FAQPage and HowTo are deferred because their current Google feature value does not justify the implementation. The marketing lead owns company and service facts. The content lead owns author and article data. The web partner owns template deployment and technical validation.
That allocation matters because the same type can move across the priority matrix when evidence or ownership changes. The matrix makes the relationship between decision value and upkeep visible for this specific consultancy. It is an example of applying the gates, not a default stack for every service business.

The resulting backlog is small enough to commission and specific enough to maintain. Its scope, owners and deferrals can be reviewed without reopening every possible Schema.org type.
Commission a maintainable backlog
Turn each selected type into a brief that names the page or template, the visible evidence, current Google support status, source of truth and implementation owner. Add who will validate the deployed output, who will maintain the facts and which implementation guide governs the detailed work.
The brief should also state the expected benefit in bounded terms. That might be an accurate organisation identity, eligibility for a documented feature, consistent authorship data or a clearer connection between an offer and its provider. Avoid success criteria based on guaranteed ranking, rich-result or AI citation gains.
If markup is already deployed and tools disagree, move the problem into the practical structured data audit. That workflow follows visible facts through CMS data, rendered output and Google-facing evidence. It also separates syntax, feature eligibility, indexing and display so a backlog decision does not turn into an improvised diagnosis.
Review the backlog when a template, plugin, CMS model, business location or source of truth changes. Recheck volatile Google support before funding deferred types. A short, owned implementation that stays true is more valuable than a large graph nobody can explain six months later.
Choose the right implementation route
A contained type with settled facts and one reliable template can often follow the relevant implementation guide. Work spanning several templates, identity decisions and Search Console evidence may need cross-template SEO governance. Changes to CMS fields, rendering logic or shared components may need website design and development.
The useful outcome is a scoped decision. Name what will be implemented now, why its evidence supports the investment, who owns it and what has been consciously deferred. That is enough to move from a generic schema wishlist to maintainable website work.
